Remembrance Day

I had the honor of making the most money in a three-hour shift this year for The Sir Sam Steele branch of the Royal Canadian Legion during its annual poppy campaign: $110. Mom taught me that the key is to smile at everyone and offer to pin the poppies for them over their hearts. Canadian support is outstanding! It is hard to find a person in November who is not wearing a poppy, often because it fell off...those bloody pins, eh?!

"Canadians stand united in their Remembrance as they recognize and honour the selfless acts of our troops from all wars.

We realize that it is because of our war veterans that we exist as a proud and free nation."

The monies raised goes toward war veterans and their dependents who are in need.

In Flanders Fields

by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row

That mark our place: and in the sky

The larks still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved, and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch: be yours to hold it high!

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

"The vast majority of the race, whether savage or civilized, are secretly kind-hearted and shrink from inflicting pain, but in the presence of the aggressive and pitiless minority they don't dare to assert themselves." ==>Mark Twain
